Peace Through Education is a feature length documentary film that examines the role of quality education in minimizing conflict and creating critical opportunities for children in developing countries.
Quality education can give children and a community a sense of hope, help reduce the cycle of poverty and increase socioeconomic development. In addition, quality education delivered in a violence-free, cooperative learning environment, teaches children critical lessons about non-violent conflict resolution.
To date, approximately 120 million children in the world are denied the opportunity to receive an education. More than 800 million adults worldwide are illiterate. The UN has said that it will cost an additional $5 billion a year to achieve universal literacy; compare this to the $189.3 billion President Bush requested for the Global War on Terrorism for the 2008 fiscal year, that is 37 years of funding universal literacy.
Stealing the Light examines the role of education in minimizing conflict and creating critical opportunities for children in Afghanistan.
We are examining this theory through the story of Mohammad Khan Kahroti and his determination to create and build a school for Afghani children in his home village of Shin Kalay, Helmond Province, Afghanistan. Green Village Schools was founded in March 2001 with only 16 students and grew to over 1200 boys and girls by 2008.
Sadly, tragedy struck in October 2008: an unidentified group of men took it upon themselves to loot the institution, bulldoze it, and destroy everything, leaving it in a heap of rubble on the ground. We may never know their reason, though it is plausible they didn't agree with the manner of secular education being provided for the children of Green Village School.
Through the words of former students and Mohammad himself we see the impact that Green Village Schools had on the students and the village of Shin Kalay as well as the devastating aftermath of its loss. We follow Mohammad on his emotional journey to rebuild his school; from the fundraising efforts in the US to the brick-by-brick reconstruction of the Green Village School in his home village.
